Back to topYour Story: The Love of the Game

I grew up in a house with a ton of guys—four brothers and my dad. Being the only girl (other than my mom of course), I was never into things like dolls and dresses. I played sports...in the mud...and I loved it. When I went away to college I was worried that I'd have trouble fitting in. I didn't really want to join a sorority or go to clubs or do any of the "typical" freshmen stuff that all the other girls were doing. I remember one day some of my floor-mates were going to a party and asked me to go, but I said no because there was a game on. They looked at me like I had two heads and clomped away in their high heels.

It wasn't until I started playing intramural sports that I really felt like I belonged there. Finally there were people who loved all kinds of sports and liked that I knew all about them. I even met my now husband playing on an intramural basketball team. He said he liked my lay up. Ha!

It was so nice to be around people who didn't judge me for being athletic and when my husband approached me for the first time after a game, I knew just by talking to him that I wouldn't have to feel embarrassed or out of place for being a "jock".

Many games and hours of ESPN later, we got married on the campus of our alma mater. (And I wore sneakers with my dress!)
